TEACHING

Kayak and Canoe Teaching

We introduce around a hundred young and older people to paddling every year. Those who decide they like it can progress with us through the BCU star test system. These range from 1-star (novice) to 5-star (rivergod). We can teach and assess 2 and 3 star, and help you on your way beyond. After 3-star, adults can also consider becoming an instructor. Over 20 club members have done so, probably because fees are reduced for qualified instructors, and several have gone on to further coaching awards, even though it doesn't save them any more money. The Club will usually pay up to 50% of coaching course fees.

Rules and Regulations

We have a small set of Club Rules mostly to do with kit and paying your subs.

Adur Canoe Club is affiliated to the British Canoe Union. The BCU is the sport's governing body in the U.K. and provides operating guidelines for paddlers and clubs in the UK.. These generally define levels of competency for leading in given conditions, plus a wide range of tests and awards. We operate within those "BCU Rules". Our instructors are qualified as BCU level 2 coaches or above. We have also defined our own Guidelines for Paddlers, with detailed guidlines for Club groups on our local waters.

The Club is also linked to West Sussex County Council's Youth Service, who generously support our instructing activities. WSCCYS has its own set of "County Rules" applicable to teaching young people. Many Club sessions fall within the scope of these rules; some do not. WSCCYS also supports the Club by providing the route whereby all our Instructors are police checked (CRB) to ensure their trustworthyness when teaching youngsters.

Adur Canoe Club is based at, but not part of, Adur Outdoor Activities Centre.

Adur Canoe Club is a group member of the Youth Hostel Association, and is affiliated to the Open Canoe Association of Great Britain.
