August 2008
Sun 31 Aug 2008BIG BOAT DAY    Good Weather Required
It's a sunny day in August, with a lazy high tide. What could be better for dragging all those big 'ole boats of the racks and seeing how fast you can go? Same times and stuff as an ordinary session, just different flavoured boats.
Open Canoes are always around of course, but find a new way to abuse them (how about an all in rescue?).
K1 racers and K2 racers even more so, challenge the "competent" kayakers more than they might expect. There's a C1 (high kneeling) racer too which is really challenging (this is with AOAC's boats, not quite sure whose it is!).
There are three white water racers, one of them an old-style C1. Interesting.
4m slalom boats are a challenge for some to get into, but very responsive.
And some big tourers. They may be ugly but the cruise along nicely. See what you've missed in your playboat!

SEA KAYAKING - GREEK ISLANDS    Sea Event
25th October to 2nd November, or slightly shorter, depending on flights. This is the October half term (West Sussex).
Please note that because of the logistics, this trip needs to be booked early. We want to book flights in the spring. Come on board now!
Based on the lovely 2005 trip to Kos, this will be similar, but using a different route. We will again be employing a guide, and hiring kayaks, from Terra Santa. We will fly out to the island of Kos, overnight in a hotel, then set off on 6 days of paddling amongst the islands, then another hotel night back on Kos. To vary the route from last time, we will probably use a ferry to get further away from Kos.
Paddling around 25Km/day in NDK Explorers, with top of the line Lendal paddles, we'll camp on beaches (Terra Santa can provide tents, as well as cooking pots etc). Most meals will be self catering, but the occasional Taverna has been known to divert us. Well, if it's there...?
It is not a complete idyll, it can get windy or bumpy, and indeed there is a chance of being wind-bound for days (just like Scotland!). But it is warm (not like Scotland). The trip is therefore suitable for paddlers of 3* ability with some experience of sea kayaks (Clare and Gid can help you get this).
Terra Santa are BCU qualified level 4 sea kayak coaches, so the trip is compliant with UK standards. Clare and Gid are level 3 sea coaches.
This is NOT a commercial holiday, it is, if you like, a communal package, we will each be responsible for our share of the total guide cost, and our own flights etc. An outline of prices likely to be:
€500 - Guiding, boat and paddling and camping kit hire
plus flights (we paid about £220 each in 2005)
plus getting to and from the airports
plus camping food
plus 2 hotel nights (Greek hotels are reasonable)
plus Taverna bills at some lunches and evening meals.
plus presents, postcards, mobile phone charges etc.
Maybe about £800. Not a cheap week.
Please note: This trip is arranged by members for members, but Adur Canoe Club does NOT provide any financial or coaching resources for this event, and does not accept any liability arising from your participation. In order to avoid any late pull-outs imposing an unreasonable burden on remaining participants, we will be asking for a substantial deposit during the spring - so if anyone pulls out and we can't find a substitute, their share of the guide cost is covered. Please remember all financial transactions are on a "group of friends" basis, there is no commercial basis until the airlines or guides are paid. You are effectively trusting your friends to make the final arrangements for a self arranged trip. Travel insurance can be a bit iffy about cancellations on such trips - check!
You should have your own travel insurance and an up to date passport. And swimmers and snorkel!

BCU/UKCC COACHING LEVEL 1 COURSE - 1 OF 2 WEEKENDS (TENTATIVE)
Tentative date for BCU region to run a level 1 course for us
See second weekend for details.
Sat 22 Nov 2008 -
  Sun 23 Nov 2008
BCU/UKCC COACHING LEVEL 1 COURSE - 2 OF 2 WEEKENDS (TENTATIVE)
Tentative date for BCU region to run a level 1 course for us
See Gideon for details.
The course is for members (and open to non-members) to obtain the new level 1 coach award.
This award equips you as a coach, perhaps rather better than the "old" level 2 award held by most of our coaches. However, it does not give the remit to run sessions independently on the Adur. Therefore it should be regarded as a stepping stone to the new level 2, which does.
Unlike the old level 2, there is no separate assessment, this 4 day course is it.
To attend the course, you need to have:
2-star award (the new one), or suitable old ones (to be clarified)
First Aid
Foundation Safety (we will arrange one before these dates). Old CST is alternative.
You will presumably also need to register. More details soon. Many more on BCU website.
The 4-day course cost should be under £100 per participant, although the BCU may also sting you for various paperwork. The club will pay 50% of the fees for members who are prepared to coach for the club.

July 2009
Mon 20 Jul 2009SEA KAYAKING - SHETLANDS (NOTE: 2009)        Good Weather Required
Some time during the 2009 summer holidays (20th July to end August), we plan to meet up again with Ken Lacey (L4, Hebrides 2007), for paddling and coaching around the Shetlands. This may take in some of a large sea kayaking event there, if the timing is right.
It is expected there is an option to drive (own boat, ferry) or to fly.
Contact Clare for more info. So far, it's only an outline.

September 2009
Sun 20 Sep 2009PUBLIC PICNIC PADDLE        Good Weather Required
Possible event only.
This event is still in the planning stage. It is part of a coordinated week's events by Brighton & Hove Council, who will be supporting the event (we hope). They didn't in 2008!
The event will be open to non-members including those who've not paddled before. It is free, but booking is essential. There may be a small charge for the cost of food.
The plan is to paddle up to a bit past Cuckoo's Creek and have an afternoon BBQ. Starting time TBD, but it will be in the afternoon, setting off about 1:30, getting back to AOAC about 5 or 6pm.
Club members are needed to come along and help with groups, kit, BBQ, and all sorts of things.
Note the late start time! High tide is about 5.5m at 15:45pm.
