See Danny G. | | Sun 26 Sep 2010 | OPEN DAY - 11:30 TIL 14:30 - BEGINNERS WELCOME Roll-up, roll-up! Adur Canoe club's 2010 Open Day. Guests No need to book. To paddle, it's best to arrive either 11:30 or about 12:45, when the two main groups will be kitted out. We have to do all the paddling in a "tide window", the last sensible arrival time (for a few stragglers!) is about 14:00. We can provide all kit, but please bring a change of clothes, and if possible, simple plimsols or wetboots. Ideal clothing for paddling is swimming cozzie and an old tracksuit, or a wetsuit for smaller children. Oh - and a towel & a bag to put your clothes in. Under 12s need to be accompanied on the water by a parent. Under 18s need a parent to sign you in. Everyone needs to sign in, and you can speed this up by downloading & fill in a Day Member form in advance (this also avoids dragging Mum along if you're 12 to 17). The event is free, but you might want a quid or three for the BBQ. Members: The idea is to show people what we do, and encourage people to come paddling. Club members are needed to come along (early!) and help with groups, kit, BBQ, and all sorts of things. High tide is at 13:30. | October 2010 | | Sat 16 Oct 2010 | BCU COACH UPDATE FORUM - SHOREHAM BCU Coach Update Forum Time: TBC, probably 9am.
Venue: AOAC
Coach: BCU Regional Coaching Organiser and others.
Cost: £15 (TBC) and club will pay half for club coaches
Bring: Your logbook, otherwise depends what workshops you choose.
Book: via BCU region, Andy Hall? (?Chris Childs chris-alison@lineone.net?) This is for already qualified BCU coaches. You are supposed to do one of these every three years, although a further coaching award is a (better) alternative. More details hopefully soon. | | Sun 17 Oct 2010 | INTENSIVE TRAINING DAY - NOT AT AOAC A whole day of training for new paddlers, below 2* standard. Kayaks and Open Canoes. Not suitable for complete beginners, please at least come to the Open Day beforehand. Depending on coach availability, we hope to offer:
Open Canoe and Kayak
Beginner standard training towards one-star
Improver standard training towards two-star
Possibly - award BCU one-star during the day Prerequesites: Adur Canoe Club membership. No particular skills beforehand, but you need to have had just a little experience at least. Min unaccompanied age 12, advisory min accompanied age 10. Under-18s need to get a parent to sign in a trip form. Bring: You need to arrive with suitable clothing, bearing in mind you will get wet, and it's October, and you'll have lunch on the beach. You will need to bring your lunch. Where:In order to offer a whole day intensive training, we need to move away from our tidally affected base. The plan is to paddle down to Kingston Beach, where we can paddle all day on flat still water. It needs to be not too windy, however. When: AOAC 10am. AOAC 5pm return. Cost: Free to club members, except for the BCU's modest registration fee if you do a one-star test. Kit: Club boats kit etc are available. No pre-booking of boats, share on the day. There will be barrel space for lunches & extra clothes. Be nice if someone could run a BBQ for lunch! Low Tide is 14:20, so it should be feasible to paddle starting & returning AOAC, but the opens will have to carry a whole day's kit! | | Sun 24 Oct 2010 | 2 STAR ASSESSMENT - KAYAK PART - USUAL TIME Kayak part of BCU 2* assessment. The open canoe part is 7th Nov. To get your (new type) 2-star you need to do both. You will spend some time in the water. Prerequesites: Club members wanting this will presumably be in training beforehand, and we'll tell you if you're ready or not! You need to arrive with suitable kit: Obviously clothing, see note on boats below, you should have suitable paddle, clothing, and emergency kit for a session. Cost: Free to club members, except for the BCU's modest registration fee when (if!) you pass. Non-members: Adur Canoe Club offers training primarily to its members - we don't attempt to compete with schools & centres in offering public training. However, it's easy to join! Members of other local BCU clubs we can probably accomodate depending on demand. If we don't know you and you want to attend the assessment please attend & kayak at least one prior club session so we can advise you if you're ready. Boats: ACC has lots of suitable kayaks. Contact Gideon to book a specific boat. High tide is 12:30. | Sat 30 Oct 2010 - Sun 31 Oct 2010 | SLALOM COMPETITION - YALDING, KENT Note this is two separate competitions on Sat and on Sun. This is also the Kent and Sussex Open event on sunday This event is suitable for slalom first-timers, but you will need to get some familiarity with the boats & the rules. Mens K1 (kayak)
Mens C1 (closed canoe)
C2 (close 2 seat canoe)
Womens K1
Womens C1 With the exception of the C1s, which are a wee bit wobbly, most paddlers around 2* standard should enjoy these boats. It is possible also to enter in "ordinary" boats.

Warm clothing & head torches required, and you need to get your gear ready smartly! Safety Water, beer, and the dark don't mix safely. The odd glass is ok, but this is not a drinking event! High tide is 8pm. We will meet at 18:30 to set off at 19:00. A quick start is required as this is a little late on the tide. We may return after the Centre has shut, so it may be a change in the car park job. Juniors welcome, but please contact Gideon beforehand. You will need a trip form signed by your parent. | | Sun 7 Nov 2010 | 2 STAR ASSESSMENT - OPEN CANOE PART - 9:30AM Early start - please be prompt - to do the open canoe part of BCU 2* assessment.
